It is to be recalled that Ethiopian Investment Commission (EIC) has recently won the ‘United Nations Award’ for its outstanding performance in targeted promotion, facilitation and execution of sustainable investment projects.
The Award was presented to the world’s best-practice inward and outward investment promotion agencies and institutions to recognize their exceptional achievements in promoting and facilitating foreign direct investment that contributes towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Award was announced by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) during the 9th Investment, Enterprise and Development Commission on 20 November 2017, in Geneva.
A delegation from the Ethiopian Investment Commission led by Commissioner Ato Fitsum Arega, received the United Nations Award for Promoting Investment in the SDGs 2017 at a special ceremony held in Geneva.
World Bank Award
“Star Reformer Award” is the second award received from the World Bank Group within a period of one month. The award is given to the Government of Ethiopia for its effective foreign direct investment (FDI) related reforms and resulting success.
In granting such a prestigious international recognition to Ethiopia, the World Bank Group appreciated the high-level political commitment the Government of Ethiopia has demonstrated towards FDI attraction and facilitation through the realization of targeted policy reforms.
Such an award forms the highest level of international recognition to the tireless effort of the Government in attracting and facilitating transformational investments into Ethiopia. This is a vivid testament yet that Ethiopia is rightly positioned to realize its vision of becoming a leading manufacturing hub in Africa by 2025.
A high-level delegation led by H.E Dr. Arkebe Oqubay, received the award at the World Bank Group Investment Competitiveness Forum held in Vienna on October 25, 2017.
Last month Ethiopian Investment Commission (EIC) received another award as the best investment promotion institution in East Africa while the Rwanda Development Board finished a runner-up.
The Annual Investment Meeting (AIM) awards the most dynamic and proactive investment promotion agencies across different regions of the world. The award recognizes outstanding works of investment promotion agencies that successfully attracted sizeable foreign direct investment projects which contribute immensely to economic growth.
This year, the Ethiopian Investment Commission and the Rwanda Development Board were nominated for the award in the East Africa Region.
Eyerusalem Amdemariam, Consul General of the FDRE in United Arab Emirates received the award presented to the Ethiopian Investment Commission at the Annual Investment Forum held 9-12 April 2018 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Also on the occasion, the Commission was lauded for its success in attracting sizable investments into industrial parks which are of high potential for export growth, technology and skills transfer as well as sustainability and local linkages. Such investments are said to be key drivers of the country’s development and global competitiveness.
Investment promotion agencies of Belgium, India, Serbia, Egypt, Ghana and Swaziland also received awards as outstanding agencies in their respective regions.
This is, in fact, regarded as one of the greatest accomplishments of the country in FDI. The former Commissioner, Ato Fitsum Arega as well as the top management team; Deputy Commissioners Ato Abebe Abebayehu, Dr. Belachew Mekuria, and Ato Teka Gebreyesus are among the main actors behind the great success.
